about the NFAS

Insurance

The NFAS holds a third party liability policy which insures members against claims on them in respect of death or injury caused by them to a third party while shooting under the auspices of the NFAS. The term "third party" includes not only the general public but also other members. Members are also indemnified against costs and expenses recoverable by any claimant. The indemnity is on account of legal liability. The total amount of indemnity is £5,000,000.

The words "under the auspices of the NFAS" mean organised by NFAS Members and NFAS Rules. Practice shooting can, therefore, be covered. Freelance roving and hunting are not covered. However, roving clouts and indoor practice are covered provided appropriate safety rules are observed. In ALL circumstances all reasonable precautions must be taken.

If a claim is made, any letter, writ, summons or process must be sent immediately to the Secretary. No admission of liability must be made or implied but the claimant may be advised that the matter is being referred to the Insurers. If an individual is insured under any other Policy giving similar cover, then this fact must also be reported to the Secretary. All queries must be referred to the Secretary of the Society who will provide on request copies of the relevant parts of the Policy for members who may need to produce them for their ground lessors.

Any dangerous shots, near miss incidents and accidents must be reported to the Safety Adviser within seven days. The names of all witnesses to these incidents must also be given. The Safety Adviser is to have those details published in the newsletter, so that we can all learn from the mistakes made.
