Coach training

When renewing your coaching card, please ensure you follow the procedure correctly. We cannot issue a new card unless you supply the following:

  • A correctly completed coach renewal form
  • Two passport photographs
  • A summary of your coaching activity

Application Requirements

To become an NFAS coach, applicants MUST meet the following criteria:

  1. Be a fully paid up member of the NFAS
  2. Must have been a member of the NFAS for a minimum period of 2 years (Discretional according to experience).
    or hold a recognised Archery coaching qualification from another society and have been a member of the NFAS for a minimum Period of 18 months. (Evidence of certification and coaching record will be required).
  3. Must have attended at least one Multi day, Multi course event which could be an NFAS National competition, SW Challenge, etc. This must have been within the last 3 years.
  4. Must hold a DBS disclosure Issued within the last 3 years. If applicant does not hold a current DBS disclosure, one will be be applied for on acceptance on a coach training course. NFAS will instigate the issue of the appropriate DBS forms. See section: DBS.
  5. Declaration of no change since DBS approval
  6. Minimum age of 18 Years.
  7. MUST have basic literacy skill.

Aim of the Coach Training Course

The aim of the coach training course is to take a NFAS member with at least two years experience, or previous archery coaching experience, through the scenario of selecting a theoretical venue suitable for coaching beginners, to risk assessing the venue, equipping it and run a beginners course with all the necessary requirements in place, making sure the course is safe, and to the NFAS standard.

Candidates are expected to produce a written assignment that may be used as a working document for planning and running a beginners course at their own club upon successfully completing the coach training course.

The course contains both practical and classroom based subjects and candidates are supplied with course notes and all the information that candidates will need to complete the course. Subjects include child protection, risk assessments, and interactive practical coaching scenarios.

The Coach Trainers will be on hand to provide guidance and help for candidates throughout the course and also during the writing of their assignment.

We have candidates from many different backgrounds and with varying academic qualifications. However, many candidates will have done very little formal learning since they left full time education, and at first glance the course may seem a little daunting.  We would like to assure you that this is not an academic test but an assessment of the candidate’s ability to coach beginners to become safe and competent members of our society. Our current course pass rate is about 98%.

PLEASE NOTE: DBS CHECKS WILL BE INITIATED BY THE COACH TRAINING CO-ORDINATOR. THIS PROCESS CAN TAKE SOME TIME, UP TO SIX WEEKS, SO IT IS ADVISED THAT RENEWALS ARE SENT IN EARLY.

We will issue an up to date list of coaches in every other magazine with renewal dates highlighted. We will not remind individuals directly; it is your responsibility to renew. Any coaching certificate which is more than three months out of date will be removed from the list and an e-mail sent to the coach’s club to inform them of this fact. I hope you appreciate that in our current climate we cannot allow uncertified coaching to take place.
